the flyer LE has become a favourite of ours due to the oversized gimbal handle, the quick adjustments you can make to the stage (which are perfect for a DSLR user switching lenses), and the amazing performance of the iso-elastic arm. when you become comfortable with the rig, it is as if it becomes part of your body and recedes into the background which allows you as the operator to reach entirely new levels with what you thought you could do. i can recall countless times i've reviewed footage after a wedding or a game and i just can't believe it was something i shot. i couldn't imagine coming close to doing the same thing with anything other than a steadicam.

the merlin, on the other hand, is an unbelievable value for what it enables the user to do at such a low price point. with the HD-DSLR revolution cameras are getting smaller and shooters are changing lenses more than ever. with the quick adjustments you can make and the overall refinement of the merlin, it is the perfect option for a small form factor stabilizer. the unit is amazing for beginners as you can very quickly take your footage to the next level, as well as intermediate or advanced users who want steadicam quality in their footage all with a small footprint. as the operator learns the principles of a steadicam and becomes comfortable with the unit, the footage you can achieve with a merlin can often rival what you can produce with a full size flyer rig costing ten times as much, and to me that speaks volumes about the value you receive with a merlin.

education is a big part of what stillmotion does and believes in. I have personally seen an incredible evolution in often such a short time from many studios throughout the world after attending one of our workshops. i know that their understanding and implementation of the steadicam line of products certainly plays a role in that evolution. an exciting part for me has always been having the attendees get into the different rigs and seeing them have that lightbulb moment when they fully realize the power of the rigs. i'll be honest, i have a lot of wives of attendees quite upset with me when their husbands come home after trying a steadicam and a new rig is already ordered because they knew their was no other option."
